Case A : Combustion to be stopped

Reasons : Blow-by at piston rings or exhaust valve action. Reduction of load on bearings. Faulty injection equipment.

Component Status :

  1. Fuel pump with roller guide : Lifted
  2. Exhaust valve : Working
  3. Air for air spring :  open
  4. Exhaust valve actuator with roller guide : Working
  5. Oil inlet for actuator : open
  6. Starting valve : Working
  7. Piston with rod : Moving
  8. Crosshead : Moving
  9. Connecting rod : Moving
  10. Crankpin bearing : Moving
  11. Oil inlet to crosshead : Open
  12. Cooling oil outlet from crosshead : Open
  13. Cylinder lubricator : Working

Case B : Compression and Combustion to be stopped

Reasons : Leaking cylinder cover or liner

Component Status :

  1. Fuel pump with roller guide : Lifted
  2. Exhaust valve : Held open
  3. Air for air spring :  Closed
  4. Exhaust valve actuator with roller guide : Out or lifted
  5. Oil inlet for actuator : Pipe dismantled and blocked
  6. Starting valve : Blanked
  7. Piston with rod : Moving
  8. Crosshead : Moving
  9. Connecting rod : Moving
  10. Crankpin bearing : Moving
  11. Oil inlet to crosshead : Open
  12. Cooling oil outlet from crosshead : Open
  13. Cylinder lubricator : Working

Case C : Combustion to be stopped(Due to faulty exhaust Valve)

Reasons : Exhaust valve, or exhaust valve actuating gear malfunction.

Component Status :

  1. Fuel pump with roller guide : Lifted
  2. Exhaust valve : Closed
  3. Air for air spring :  Open
  4. Exhaust valve actuator with roller guide : Out or lifted
  5. Oil inlet for actuator : Open
  6. Starting valve : Working
  7. Piston with rod : Moving
  8. Crosshead : Moving
  9. Connecting rod : Moving
  10. Crankpin bearing : Moving
  11. Oil inlet to crosshead : Open
  12. Cooling oil outlet from crosshead : Open
  13. Cylinder lubricator : Working

Case D : All reciprocating parts suspended or out

Reasons : Quickest and safest measure in the event of faults in large moving parts, or cylinder cover or cylinder liner.

Component Status :

  1. Fuel pump with roller guide : Lifted
  2. Exhaust valve : Closed
  3. Air for air spring :  Open
  4. Exhaust valve actuator with roller guide : Out or lifted
  5. Oil inlet for actuator : Open
  6. Starting valve : Blanked
  7. Piston with rod : Suspended
  8. Crosshead : Suspended
  9. Connecting rod : Out
  10. Crankpin bearing : Out
  11. Oil inlet to crosshead : Blanked
  12. Cooling oil outlet from crosshead : NA
  13. Cylinder lubricator : Zero Delivery

Case E : All reciprocating parts out

Reasons : Only of interest if spare parts are not available

Component Status :

  1. Fuel pump with roller guide : Lifted
  2. Exhaust valve : Closed
  3. Air for air spring :  Open
  4. Exhaust valve actuator with roller guide : Out or lifted
  5. Oil inlet for actuator : Open
  6. Starting valve : Blanked
  7. Piston with rod : Out
  8. Crosshead : Out
  9. Connecting rod : Out
  10. Crankpin bearing : Out
  11. Oil inlet to crosshead : Blanked
  12. Cooling oil outlet from crosshead : NA
  13. Cylinder lubricator : Zero Delivery
